EcoBoost oil pump

EcoBoost oil pump

The oil pressure for the LF and L5 engines seem to not have a lot of head room for track use.
The rule of thumb for the track is to have 10 psi of pressure per 1000 RPM, so 70 psi @ 7K RPM.

I documented the pressure on a well worn L5 here and found it to be ~ ok for the max usable 6500 rpm of the engine.

I could not find the logs, but on the 2.0 + SC I logged oil pressure all the way down to 55 psi @ 7K RPM which was def not good.

An interesting thread on m.net Oil pressure concerns when using an oil cooler fixed the problem by using a pump from the 2.3 turbo EcoBoost engine.

So while building the new L3-VDT/L5 head engine I used this pump in hopes of higher and more stable oil pressure.

Pump info:

2012-2018 Ford Mustang EcoBoost (2.3) Part Number: F2GZ-6600-A
Supersession(s): AG9Z 6600A; AG9Z 6600C; AG9Z 6600A; AG9Z 6600C; AG9Z-6600-A; AG9Z-6600-C; AG9Z6600C; F2GE-6600-AA; F2GE6600AA; F2GZ6600A

Some comparison shots of the old L5 pump and the (shiny) F2GZ-6600-A:

At first glance the pumps look similar, but there are some differences in the casting which hints at an enlarged internal volume:

On the input/output side of things there are only some small differences.

Here are some data from my latest tuning session showing oil pressure vs rpm in the lower section as well as some other parameters.

  • Road tuning, not on the track.
  • The car has an external oil cooler setup. Pressure is measured after the cooler in the OEM location.
  • This is on a newly built L3-VDT short block, so tolerances is probably very tight.
  • The pump is using the OEM L5 chain sprocket.

( NB the oil pressure is PSI, not kPa as shown in the pic.)

Some observations (from the actual log )

  • The oil pressure peaks at 75 psi at 7K. But it stays at this level all the way from 4400 rpm and up. This could mean the relief valve is open already at 4400 rpm.
  • Idle pressure with the temps shown is 34 psi.

Not sure what to make of the results since the engine and oil cooler setup is new. If the pressure profile stays this way in the future all is good, and better than what I have been getting before on previous setups. As always the real test will be on the track.
